NHL fan favorite referee Wes McCauley and Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been butting heads since the start of the post-season this year. The veteran official has been accused of harboring ill biases against Toronto, and many fans think McCauly has a personal vendetta against the Leafs. Unfortunately, some fans took things too far, and McCauley has revealed just how bad it got for him and his family.
McCauley Family Received Death Threats
Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star revealed today that NHL referee Wes McCauley did in fact receive death threats directed at both himself and his family, while officiating round one of the NHL playoffs this year. McCauley was the topic of conversation for much of round one, as many fans speculated that he had reasons to hurt the Leafs, stemming back to family ties. While the NHL has stood by their fan-favorite ref, and stated that McCauley is one of the best there is, that didn't stop fans from taking things way too far.
There's being passionate, and then there's acting violent and threatening. Whichever fans said these disgusting things towards McCauley and his family should be ashamed of themselves.
Sheldon Keefe was asked about the officiating for tonight's game, and voiced his support for McCauley.
«The only way I would answer that is just to say that officials don't have any impact on the game. It's not my focus, but Wes has treated me like a true professional the whole time that I've been in this league and I've been very appreciative of that.»
