While his 2023 post season stats still look really good (5 G, 6 A, 11 GP), the lack of goals from sniper Auston Matthews has certainly been noticeable. Matthews has yet to score in the Toronto Maple Leafs - Florida Panthers second round series, which is not something you'd expect from someone of his caliber. If it's causing worry for his teammates, they certainly aren't showing it.

"He's a threat every time he's on the ice, even if he's not scoringHe knows how good of a player he is and we know it too," - Michael Bunting

"You worry about a guy when he's not getting chances and looksBut he's been playing great," - Luke Schenn

Regular season

The 2022-23 regular season wasn't exactly stellar by the standards Matthews has created with his play. For most, a 40 goal season would be considered excellent. For Matthews, it was his lowest total since 2018-19 when he had 37. It makes you wonder if the 25-year-old is still nursing an injury, although he insisted near the end of the regular season that what ever was wrong had gotten much better, and he felt better on the ice. Toronto needs its star to play like one if there's any hope of coming back from the current 3-1 series deficit to Florida.
