As Major League Baseball enters the busiest part of the offseason with the winter meetings, Maple Leafs general manager was asked a question about Shohei Ohtani in jest. His response was equally funny, but also quite revealing as to how he feels about his current team. The comment left fans wondering if these are the positions Treliving is actively trying to upgrade.
It has been believed for some time that the Leafs have been trying to make a trade on the backend. They were involved in the Nikita Zadorov trade rumors and now they have been linked to Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro.
Ferraro, a native of Toronto, has two years left after this one at a 3.25 million dollar cap hit. He is reportedly getting interest from multiple teams around the league so the Leafs may have more competition if they target him as well.
However, the team's options may be limited as Flames owner Murray Edwards is holding a grudge against Treliving for leaving Calgary, making a trade for Chris Tanev more difficult. We already have seen the flames deal Zadorov to the Canucks for what was supposed to be a premium, but a 3rd and 5th round pick does not really seem like the team paid a tax for being within the same division.
The next move for Treliving will likely be to acquire a defenseman, but we will just have to wait and see when that move finally comes.
