Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe made a bold move when he decided to healthy scratch center David Kampf when the Leafs took on the Hurricanes last week. Now the centerman has revealed his thoughts on the situation.

Kampf Addresses Being Healthy Scratched For First Time In Over 300 Games

Kampf was healthy scratched by Sheldon Keefe after he had a turnover that lead to a goal against in the team's last game against the Columbus Blue jackets. Keefe noted that he would have less tolerance for defensive mistakes after the game.

Sheldon Keefe says there is going to be «less tolerance» for defensive mistakes going forward and cites David Kampf as a scratch as an example of that tonight. Pontus Holmberg will draw in.

Kampf was apparently surprised by the move. This makes sense considering that he had played in over 300 consecutive games to that point.

David Kampf says he was «surprised» to learn he was going to be scratched last game but is moving on and focused on the next game.

Keefe Refused To Hold Top Players Accountable

Furthermore, Kampf is far from the Leafs worst defensive forward. In fact, he is arguably the team's best penalty killer. His presence on the PK was felt badly as the Hurricanes scored two powerplay goals against them while Kampf watched from the press box. In this regard, the move backfired on Keefe as the team could have used him in those instances, Furthermore, many fans have pointed out that other players, namely Mitch Marner, have not received the same level of criticism for their defensive mistakes despite the fact that they have often been more significant.

is that really what were doing here? sitting david kampf? wtf does that prove? benching marner for a period would do infinitly more than scratching kampf

That being said, Keefe seems to continue to be reluctant to bench Marner despite his defensive mistakes this season.
