After getting himself into cap trouble, Kyle Dubas made a gamble and it has not worked out in the slightest, and continues to screw the Leafs.

Dubas' Worst Move Continues To Age Poorly

In the summer of 2017, former Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello signed veteran forward Patrick Marleau to a 3 year $18.75 million deal. This deal immediately looked terrible and was one of the reasons why Lamoriello was fired as the GM of the Leafs.

Kyle Dubas then inherited the Marleau mess and irresponsibly, Dubas spent lots of money. It got to the point where he was forced to move Marleau if he wanted to build a full roster.

In a move of desperation, Dubas traded Patrick Marleau along with a 1st-round pick and a 7th-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 6th-round pick. While the 1st round pick had top-10 protection on it, it did not matter as the pick winded up being 13th overall.

The Hurricanes immediately bought out Marleau which only cost them about $835,000 but $6.25 million in cap space.

What Happened To The Pick?

The Leafs pick turned into Seth Jarvis, a top 6 forward on the cup-contending Canes. While Jarvis had a tad of a sophomore slump this past regular season (39 points in 82 games), he has really stepped it up this postseason posting 10 points in 12 games.

For comparison, this is more points than any Leafs player not named Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, Morgan Reilly, or William Nylander. Jarvis would also be tied for the Leafs' team lead in goals with Auston Matthews.

If Dubas were to not have made a desperate move as a result of him spending to the cap, the Leafs could have Seth Jarvis right now who is on a tear for the team that was willing to give the Leafs some cap relief.
