The NCAA loophole has been a main topic of contention lately, as some NCAA players are walking to free agency. It has now screwed the Senators.
Leafs Steal NCAA Prospect From the Senators
Ottawa selected defenseman Jonny Tychonick
in the second round in 2018. He hasn't quite lived up to expectations, but he is still a good prospect.
Using the infamous NCAA loophole, where a player can walk to free agency after completing their college career, Tychonick opted not to sign in Ottawa, and instead committed himself to the Toronto Marlies for next season.

The Senators still theoretically hold his rights for another few months, but clearly they knew they had no chance of signing the defenseman.
Good for the Leafs, terrible for the Senators! What a way to waste a second-round pick.
Do you think the league should close the NCAA loophole?
