Shane Wright was once a top draft pick of the Seattle Kraken, but despite his talent, he's yet to find his home in the NHL, instead, he has been continuing his dominance in the OHL.
A new home?
After bouncing around between the OHL, AHL and NHL in 2022-23, Wright has now officially been cleared by the OHL to play with the Kraken's AHL affiliate, meaning he's ready to make that step to the next level.
Kraken general manager Ron Francis said that he'll be granted an exemption to send Shane Wright to the American Hockey League in lieu of the junior ranks if he doesn't make the NHL squad.
It will once again be tough for Wright, still just 19-years of age to crack the NHL roster in 2023-24 out of training camp, so playing him in the AHL will be a much better situation for his development, as the team still see him as a key piece of their future.
Untapped potential
Last season was a bit of a mess for Wright, as he was traded in the OHL, while also getting 8 games in the AHL and 8 in the NHL, but now, it appears he'll finally have some consistency which should be a big move for his development.
In those 8 AHL games a year ago, Wright netted 4 goals and 6 points, and if he can start like that again in 2023-24, there's no doubting that he's set up to push the NHL roster much better from the AHL squad.
