It's no secret that some of the Penguins' veterans aren't performing up to expectations. The team has one of the worst veteran corps in the league.

Sullivan Pledges Support for Carter and Dumoulin

Jeff Carter, in the first year of a two-year extension he signed in Pittsburgh, has been tough to watch this year. At 38, he's one of the oldest active skaters in the league, and unfortunately, he's starting to look like it.
Being part of a disastrous third line, nepotism shouldn't get in the way - he should be in the press box every night.
As for Brian Dumoulin, the 31-year-old just hasn't been able to pull it all together this season. He is also making a whopping $4.1-million. With Jeff Petry visibly regressing as well, the future of Pittsburgh on D is worrying. Luckily, he's a pending UFA.
Mike Sullivan still supports these players however, much to the chagrin of fans.
"You guys like to pick on certain guys. You go to them all the time. We respectfully disagree with you in a lot of circumstances. When goals are scored, we look at a lot of the details on the hows and whys. Reality is it's more than one person."

"Those are easy guys to pick on, but what I will tell you is all year long we've put them in difficult circumstances. Those guys play against top players in defensive situations all the time."

Citing Carter's faceoff percentage, and Dumoulin's involvement on plays are both valid points, but the eye test tells a different story.
Something needs to change in Pittsburgh, but it has start with Mike Sullivan himself.
