The 2024/25 NHL season is quickly approaching, and few teams in the league this season have more optimism over a potential Stanley Cup run than the New Jersey Devils. With the acquisition of Jacob Markstrom to fix their goaltending issues, the confidence remains high, but unfortunately they've got some bad news before the season has even begun.
After recent speculation on social media, the Devils have now confirmed that standout defenseman Luke Hughes has suffered a shoulder injury, but fortunately for the team and their hopes in 2024/25, the news is much better than initially expected.
In an announcement on social media, the Devils confirmed the injury, but revealed that the youngest of the three Hughes brothers will miss just six to eight weeks, with that recovery time stretching into the regular season. It's certainly not the way that the team wanted to start camp, but it's much better than a season ending injury, so the optimism of their potential this season still remains.
Last year, Luke Hughes played his first full season in the league, playing in all 82 games for New Jersey, tallying a solid 9 goals and 47 points on the year, and while he's got plenty to work on, playing alongside veteran Brett Pesce will help as the Devils look to make their charge to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
