Today a new record has been broken in the hockey world by the KHL team that Vladimir Putin supports.

Putin's Favorite Team Destroys Montreal Canadiens With New Record

A new announcement was revealed by the KHL on X that has called out the NHL and the Montreal Canadiens. The KHL announced that Vladimir Putin's favorite KHL team SKA St. Petersburg is closing in on the record for the largest crowd in attendance in a hockey arena.

The new SKA arena is expected to be able to hold 21,500 people. This will be around 400 more people than the current record holder the Montreal Canadiens.

The first KHL game at the biggest hockey arena in the world (21,500) is scheduled for February 11, 2024 (SKA vs HC Sochi).

The KHL is known as one of the best quality hockey leagues in the world and they continue to show their commitment to the sport within Russia with this new arena. It also brings on further competition between the KHL and NHL.

KHL Continues To Try And Catch The NHL

The KHL has always been known as one of the better leagues in the world. It is supported heavily and the teams invest in new arenas and paying top players. Despite this, they have always fallen behind the NHL and often even the AHL in talent.

In recent years the KHL has tried to step up their game in keeping homegrown talent. This is best evidenced by Matvei Michkov who is an SKA player himself and signed there through 2026.

Now that the KHL has set this record it will be interesting to see if any NHL team tries to break the record again with one of their new arenas.
