The NHL has been no stranger to controversies in recent weeks, specifically regarding their highly protested Pride Nights. Now, P.K Subban has added his thoughts on the matter at hand.
Subban Says People Need to Stop "Pressuring" Players Into Wearing Pride Jerseys
Subban has decided to voice his own opinion regarding the matter of Pride Nights and players refusing to wear the warm-up jerseys along with them. Subban had this to say on the issue:
"We cannot push everyone to be an activist, we need to be very careful, I feel people pick and choose what they want to talk about and I don't like it when we put the onus on athletes to be activists."
"They don't need to be activists."
"I'm not saying it is right or wrong to wear the (Pride) jersey, we have just got to be very careful how we push players to do things."
"You can support the LGBTQ community without having to wear a hat, a t-shirt or a jersey."
This is certainly a contentious issue to talk about, and Subban's opinion is considered to be the unpopular one by many. He is one of the first bigger names in the sport to voice support for the players refusing to wear the jerseys.
This statement may be disappointing to some of Subban's fans, especially those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. It's certainly hard to find out that a player you look up to doesn't support you.
