The Edmonton Oilers were looking to make a bit of a splash in terms of shoring up their defense this offseason and they've decided to take a chance on former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott.

Edmonton announced the signing via their X account earlier on Friday after speculation that the team was looking to add the 27-year old on a PTO in order to see if he can add to their defensive depth.

Dermott joins superstars Connor McDavid (whom he spent two years as a teammate of as a member of the Erie Otters) as well as Leon Draisaitl, and former teammate Zach Hyman. He's looking to fill the hole left by Philip Broberg after he jumped ship with an offer sheet from the from the St. Louis Blues, and could find himself pairing up on the third grouping with Brett Kulak, or slot in on either side of the ice; much like Broberg was capable of.

Dermott was a member of the Maple Leafs from 2017-2022 after the team drafted him 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He registered 12 goals and 40 assists in 251 games in his time with the Leafs before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2022 3rd Round pick. He didn'y play much in Vancouver, only skating in 28 games for the Canucks with 3 points over that span. After his time with the Canucks he signed a deal with Arizona where he had a better season statistically with 2 goals and 5 assists in 50 games for the lowly then-Coyotes.

Dermott has history with a few members of the Oilers, having been teammates with Connor McDavid in Erie for two seasons, as well as having current head coach Kris Knoblauch who he played under in Erie. He also reunites with former Erie and Maple Leafs teammate Connor Brown, as well as former Maple Leaf Zach Hyman.
