On May 16th, the fate of the Arizona Coyotes will be in the hands of the citizens of Tempe, Arizona. If the proposed multi-billion dollar entertainment district doesn't pass the citizens vote, the Coyotes will be without a home, and will almost certainly face relocation. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has done everything in his power to save this franchise, but will it be enough?
The Coyotes currently play in a 5,000 seat arena which is shared with ASU's Mens Ice Hockey team. This temporary home only guarantees the Coyotes a home until 2026, at which point they would either move into the new Tempe Entertainment District, or relocate elsewhere. NHL Insider Frank Seravalli shared a new update regarding the situation in Arizona, and it looks bleak for the NHL.
The idea of an NHL team's front office members having to go door-to-door as they try to make their pitch to the citizens of a city to let them stay is nothing short of embarrassing, and should be a clear indication of where this franchise is headed. Severalli also mentioned that if the vote doesn't go in the NHL's favor, the team could be moved before their time at ASU officially ends.
If this is the case, we could see the NHL expand to a new city, or perhaps a familiar one. Houston and Quebec City are the two that come to mind for most people, but the NHL would likely consider a handful of cities for expansion.
