Team Sweden vs. Team USA needed overtime after some late heroics from Mika Zibanejad, but it was Quinn Hughes who sealed the deal in the extra frame.
With Team USA leading 1-0 late in the third period, it was Mika Zibanejad who ended up creating another OT thriller as Sweden was able to take the US to the limit, leading to sudden death.
The Americans didn't need to wait until the waning minute of the extra period however to do damage, as Quinn Hughes was the hero as he wired a shot off the post and in over Jacob Markstrom to send USA to the semifinals:
Hughes looked dangerous the entire period as he was given loads of extra room by the Swedish defenders and it led to their undoing.
Matthews prevails over Nylander in teammate clash
It means that Auston Matthews is able to move onto the semifinals where he will take on Slovakia to see who gets a chance to fight for a gold medal. The heavy favourites heading into their semifinal game, Team USA might not need OT but they will need to cool off the red-hot Juraj Slavkofsky.
Matthews for his part, was a big piece in the winning goal as he got an assist on Hughes' winner.
But it also puts an end to William Nylander's Olympic hopes, and while the Americans were favoured going into the game, they hadn't beaten the Swedes at the Olympics since 1960 -- a long time coming no doubt.
It's an unfortunate exit for Nylander however he should hold his head up high regardless. He finished the tournament with four points in five games and still looked ever the superstar, but at least now he can go ahead and rest up whatever injuries were nagging him.
Now it becomes a question of whether or not we will see that coveted Canada vs. USA gold medal game, though it's highly likely unless we see a couple big upsets. With Matthews showing how good he is, and Mitch Marner being a hero for the Canadians -- their rivalry will be on display to a much wider audience.
Who will come out on top? Only time will tell but for now, it seems Matthews can pop the champagne and celebrate before getting back to business on his quest for Olympic glory.
