Rumor: Blockbuster Trade Emerges Between Two Stanley Cup Contenders

The Boston Bruins have been one of the teams the Edmonton Oilers have reportedly been in trade talks with regarding a new goaltender. While it seems unlikely that the Bruins would be willing to give up half of their league-best goalie tandem, anything is possible for the right price in the NHL.

Bruins And Oilers Considering Mutually Beneficial Hockey Trade?

It is no secret the the Oilers need help in goal badly. One area where the Bruins need help is at center after their top two centers both left the team this offseason. One trade proposal involves the Oilers sending a center and a draft pick in exchange for Linus Ullmark.

Oilers To Solve Their Goaltending Problem By Trading For Bruins Goalie

No doubt the Oilers would be interested in this trade. They have gotten some of the worst goaltending across the NHL this season and Jack Campbell is at a point where he may never return to NHL form. The team is currently relying on Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, not exactly a reliable duo. Adding Ullmark would solve this problem and giving up Nugent-Hopkins may just be the price that they have to pay to get the job done. While he is certainly a decently big part of their forward core, they can probably manage without him given that they still have Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Bruins May Want More From Oilers In Exchange For Ullmark

All of that being said, the Bruins may not be satisfied with just Nugent-Hopkins and a 2nd round pick. Afterall, Ullmark is one half of a goalie tandem that has proven to be one of the best, if not the best, in the entire NHL over the last two seasons.

While Nugent-Hopkins would certainly improve their depth at center, he still does not really fit the ideal number on center on a playoff team kind of role. He is over a point-per-game this season, but a third of his points have come on the powerplay, where he gets to pass pucks to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. That's not to say that he is not still a very good player, but his production may not translate as well to a less talented Bruins squad. Regardless though, the Bruins should be listening to offers where they can improve their center depth as that position is often critical to playoff success.
