NHL analyst reveals how Toronto can open $7.4 million in cap space
As the Toronto Maple Leafs remain over their cap space, NHL analyst Kevin Papetti revealed how the team could open up more than $7 million without trading core players.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have become one of the boldest franchises in the NHL trade market this offseason, starting it off by signing a contract with former Dallas Stars defenseman Chris Tanev.
However, after reaching deals with much of their previous roster, the team remains over their allotted cap space.
"Updated list of each NHL team's cap situation from Cap Friendly. Caps, Leafs and Canucks are over."
Luckily, Toronto still has time and options to bring themselves back under their limit. NHL analyst Kevin Papetti revealed a plan that would not only fit their budget, but would also open $7.4 million in cap space without touching their core players.
"It won't happen, but here's a look at how much cap space the Leafs could create by trading depth players.
Out: Liljegren, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Reaves, and Timmins.
Cowan, Minten, and Rifai can be replaced by other <$1M players.
This team has $7.4M in space and a 7th D."
Though even Papetti admits that this mock-up is a stretch, it may not be as far from reality as it seems.
Chris Johnston recently revealed on a recent edition of his show that Toronto may look to trade some of these players anyway, naming three in particular.
"They would look at moving Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Timothy Liljegren in the right deal. I should be very clear, that is not to say they are trying to get rid of them at all costs, but I think that because of the Leafs' salary cap, they are pretty tight up against it." With Toronto needing to return to budget, Papetti may not be beyond the pale with at least a portion of his strategy. What the Maple Leafs will decide to do with more cap space, however, only time will tell.
