Playing in the biggest hockey market in the world in Toronto is always going to be tough for some players with the intense scrutiny from fans and the media, and unfortunately, sometimes, players get singled out by those fans.
Despite earning just $2 million a year, so not expected to be the teams biggest star, Holl's mistakes were often amplified, and at the end of his last season, it seemed like the best move for both parties to part ways.
In free agency, Holl signed a three-year deal worth $3.4 million per season in Detroit, and with that type of money, most expected him to step into a top-four spot on the Red Wings blue line.
Surprisingly however, on the eve of their first game, Holl is the team's extra defenseman despite that hefty salary, and now, it appears as though the Maple Leafs dodged a major bullet with the ageing 31-year old.
