Insider Reveals Significant Update on Matthews' Future with the Maple Leafs
Despite Auston Matthews' down year this past season, the Leafs are still adamant about resigning him. While the Leafs want to get a deal done, there is unpredictability on whether Matthews will want to resign.
NHL insider Chris Johnston said the following regarding Matthews' future in Toronto:
"Nothing has changed in terms of the last time Auston Matthews spoke at locker clean-out day. His intention is to sign with the Leafs."
This is huge news for the Leafs because it means that despite the Dubas firing, Matthews will still want to be with the team.
What Could A Matthews Contract Look Like?
It will all depend on the length he signs for. The longest he could sign for is 8 years and if he signs for that long, he will likely get a $13 million+ per year contract. Potentially even up to $15 million per year if he bounces back to MVP form.
If he were to sign a short deal, saying he wants to give it another shot with the current core, it will likely be over $12 million and potentially still the richest contract in the league.
Regardless of the price tag, the Leafs need to get Matthews signed or else they will have wasted one of the top players of a generation.
