Auston Matthews Has an Incredible Milestone Within Reach

Both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl achieved the 300-goal milestone recently, becoming some of the fastest active players to accomplish this feat. Draisaitl netted his 300th goal against the Arizona Coyotes on March 27th in his 630th career game, while McDavid reached the mark last thursday night in his 563rd career game.

Among active players, Alexander Ovechkin holds the record for the fastest to reach 300 goals in 473 games, followed by Steven Stamkos at 550 games, McDavid, Sidney Crosby at 622 games, and Draisaitl completing the top 5. However, Leafs' reigning MVP Auston Matthews is poised to join this elite group soon and push Draisaitl out of the top 5.

Matthews Could Reach the 300 Goals Milestone Soon

Matthews has scored 296 career goals in 474 games. Just 4 goals shy of the 300-mark, he should reach it by the end of the season at the latest. Although he narrowly missed surpassing the legendary Ovechkin, Matthews is set to secure the 2nd spot, comfortably ahead of Stamkos, McDavid, Crosby, and Draisaitl.

Matthews has hit the 30-goal mark in all seven seasons, scored 35+ goals six times, 40+ goals four times, and 50+ goals once. Currently at 37 goals this season, reaching the 300-goal milestone would also mean another 40+ goal season—his fifth in just seven years.

Since his debut as a 19-year-old in the 2016-17 season, the 25-year-old has been outstanding, winning the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year with his 40-goal performance. If Matthews maintains his current form, he could be challenging Ovechkin's records for years to come.

Should he reach 300 goals this season, Matthews will also become the 7th youngest player to do so, trailing behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Dale Hawerchuk, Mike Bossy, Steve Yzerman, and Ovechkin. This achievement would put him ahead of players like Michel Goulet, Jari Kurri, Stamkos, Jaromir Jagr, and McDavid.
