The Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens franchise outlook couldn't look more different right now, but now a trade has been revealed that could have changed both teams fortunes.
A disaster avoided
Back in 2016, both of these teams were in unique spots going forward, with the Oilers having Connor McDavid blossoming into a star, but like now, their defensive core just wasn't up to scratch.
Montreal on the other hand were looking for some promising young forward talent, and it led them to almost make a move that could have changed the entire NHL landscape.
A potential blockbuster
As detailed on social media, this is the details of the deal that almost came to fruition.
To Edmonton:
 PK Subban
 9th Overall (became Sergachev)
To Montreal:
 Leon Draisaitl
 Darnell Nurse
4th Overall Pick (became Puljujarvi) Edmonton would have had a sured up blue line and the chance to land another star in the draft, while the Canadiens would have landed a higher pick, a superstar forward and a talented defenseman in the deal.
The deal would have seen Montreal trade Subban, who they ended up moving regardless in order to get back one of the best players in hockey, and with the chance to do-over the 4th overall pick in the draft, this would have been a major steal for them.
Ultimately, this move may have made sense at the time, but given the star pairing of Draisaitl and McDavid in Edmonton right now, they will have been glad to have not made the deal, and for Montreal fans, this would have been a deal that could have changed their fortunes forever, so they'll regret not landing this one.
