Ryan Suter has enjoyed a lengthy career as one of the NHL's most notable defensemen.

He signed a twin contract along with forward Zach Parise with the Minnesota Wild back in 2012, that would've lasted each of them until 2025. Unfortunately for Suter and Parise, both of their contracts were bought out by the Wild two seasons ago, leaving them as free agents.

Suter ended up signing with the Dallas Stars, agreeing to a 4-year contract worth $3.65 million annually. Suter just finished the second year of this contract, and as Dallas shifts their focus from the playoffs to the off-season, Suter may once again be a buyout candidate.

The Case For Buying Out Suter

Suter will be 40 years old by the completion of his current contract with Dallas. He still holds some value as an NHL defenseman but is only a shell of his prime self. The Stars are still very much in a "win now" mode, and by buying out Suter, could save themselves some much-needed cap space.

Elliotte Friedman touched on the topic in his 32 Thoughts Podcast.

The more you think about it, the more sense it makes for Dallas to buy out Suter's contract. The first two years after the buyout cost Dallas practically nothing, while the final two are a little more pricey. It allows Dallas to be more aggressive in their push for playoff success and opens up a roster spot for a younger player.

It seems like Suter may actually end up being the first NHL player to be bought out of a contract twice, which is a title few players desire to hold.
