Then they struggled to win which led to their General Manager leaving. Finally, they fired their coach after several complaints from players about him. Now the controversy continues as a respected member of the team has been stripped of his captaincy.
Flames Veteran Stripped Of Captaincy
The first day of NHL training camp has stirred up conversation. Headshots were done for each player and fans noticed something important missing from Mikael Backlund's jersey.
Backlund wore an A last year in his photo, this year, no A.
While this could be just a formality until captains are announced later on in the preseason it could be significant. Backlund has said on record that he would love to be the captain of the Calgary Flames.
If the Flames do not name Backlund captain things could get awkward in Calgary. He is very respected and has been an assistant captain in the past. However, he is entering the last year of his contract which could impact his status in the mind of the front office.
Mikael Backlund didn't really get into contract stuff with us, but said it would really mean a lot for him to wear the C as captain.
Does his contract status get in the way of him being part of the discussion?
"I don't know, we'll see what happens."
It seems that for now, Backlund is not concerned with the missing letter on his jersey. As the season draws closer it will be interesting to see if things change.
