Trade Proposal Involving Matt Murray to the Montreal Canadiens has Surfaced
BY TJ TUCKER MAY 24, 2023 (8:34 PM)
The Contract
Murray has one year left on his contract at a cap hit of just under $4.7 million (The Ottawa Senators still have 25 percent of his cap hit in 2023-24). It's cap space Toronto could sorely use to attempt to make a deep playoff run next season. The problem is very few teams are willing to take Murray, who's been injury prone the last few seasons, and not playing well even when he's not hurt.
The Proposal
The idea presented in a column by Dans Les Coulisses has Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes picking up the final season of Murray's contract. With the Canadiens unlikely to compete for a playoff spot again in 2023-24, the idea is to pick up Murray's contract at the draft for a pick and or prospect. It's very similar in detail to the deal the Habs made with the Calgary Flames last offseason, and it's one that makes a ton of sense for both sides.
What would it be worth to the new GM of the Maple Leafs to dump Murray? Taking on Monahan earned the Canadiens a 1st round pick in return for future considerations. An easy one to make given the current position of the Habs. The extra cap space allowed the Flames to sign Nazem Kadri.
