During Wednesday night's game against Colorado. Commentator Craig Simpson pointed out how uncommon it was for the Leafs to get a 5-on-3 powerplay this season. Comparing Colorado, who have had 7 opportunities, which ranks them 14th in this category.

How many 5-on-3 powerplays have the Leafs had?

The Winnipeg Jets and Minnesota Wild lead the league in 5-on-3 powerplays with 14 each, third goes to the Ottawa Senators, who have 11. The Leafs have had 0 5-on-3 powerplay opportunities this season. This statistic shuts down any beliefs that the Leafs get special treatment. In fact, the Leafs usually get more calls against them, blatant penalties against the Leafs are often missed.

The Leafs are currently in the bottom third in the league for regular powerplay opportunities. The Leafs have had to fight off five 5-on3 penalties. The Rangers, Islanders, Knights and the Kraken are the only teams who have had the least 5-on-3 powerplay time amongst the playoff teams. 15 games remain in the season, so it is still possible for Toronto to get a 5-on-3 powerplay, but if they do not get one, they would be the first team since the 2009-2010 season, when the league began tracking this statistic, to have an entire season without a 5-on-3 powerplay opportunity.
