Several Rule Changes Officially Implemented in the NHL for the 2023-24 Season
Updates Made to Helmet Rules in Warmups
Changes to who is allowed to go bucket-less in warmup have been made for this season. Previously, it was only a suggestion that players wear helmets during warmups. However, after several GMs complained that there was an increase in injuries from stray pucks, the rule has been changed. Players who entered the league after 2019 will now be required to wear helmets during warmups.
Illegal Sticks Simplified and More Likely to be Called
The illegal stick rules have been simplified this year, putting all the rules and conditions under one rule, rule 10.8. The purpose of doing so is to empower refs to more fairly and efficiently call illegal sticks on players.
New Addition to the Coaches Challenge
There has been an additional play that has been added to the coach's challenge eligibility. The rulebook now includes when a puck goes out of play without officials noticing, that it is eligible for a coaches' challenge, regardless of which team sent the puck out of play.
Offsides Sees a New Update
The rulebook has been updated to provide some clarity on offside situations when a player leaves the ice while offside. The rulebook now says the following:
"If, during a delayed off-side, an attacking player in the attacking zone chooses to proceed to his players' bench (which extends into the attacking zone) to be replaced by a teammate, he shall be considered to have cleared the zone when both skates are off the ice, and the Linesperson judges him to have left the playing surface."
This is seemingly a small change, however, it will be interesting to see if teams can take advantage of the new rule this season.
