Former Maple Leafs defenseman injured in IIHF World Hockey Championship

Former Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman, and current Washington Capital, Rasmus Sandin, was injured this morning at the IIHF World Hockey Championship after taking a knee-on-knee hit against Team USA.

Team USA's Michael Eyissmont caught Sandin in a lot of pain, ultimately forcing him out of the game just five minutes into the first period. Sandin would hobble to the dressing room holding his left leg in severe pain. Eyissmont received a five-minute kneeing penalty and a game misconduct as a result of the play.

Sandin has been a key contributor for Team Sweden as they sit in second place behind only the United States for the top spot in Group A. As the game progressed, Sweden would capitalize on the ensuing five-minute power-play, but Sandin did not return to the game.

Sandin's status

In all of the six games for Team Sweden, Sandin has been skating in the top pairing. This would be a huge blow for the team going forward. As of now, there is no update on the severity of the injury and his status for the rest of the tournament.
