The Maple Leafs faced many problems with their goaltenders over the season, but Ilya Samsonov stepped up to the challenge.

Matt Murray was frequently sidelined due to injuries, and as a result, Samsonov appeared in 42 games, a number far exceeding the expectations.

What's even more surprising is his impressive statistics. Samsonov registered a record of 27-10-5, including four shutouts, with a save percentage of .919 and a GAA of 2.33.

He's performed admirably, except since the start of the second round.

This, however, does not alter the fact that Samsonov has been a strong asset for the Leafs, and he's set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. If Toronto wishes to retain him, they'll have to reach deep into their pockets, as suggested by Evolving-hockey.com.

His outstanding regular season, as well as his performance in the playoff's first round (where he outperformed Andrei Vasilevskiy), will be factored into his next contract.

It's projected that Samsonov will command an annual salary of $5.178M over a span of four years.

This figure is on par with the league average for starting goalies. However, for the Leafs to commit such a sum, they'll need to make significant maneuvers in the offseason.

We may see Matt Murray being traded, which would free up enough cap space to sign Samsonov.

With Samsonov currently injured, the Leafs will have to rely on Woll for tonight's game. Nonetheless, discussions surrounding Samsonov's contract will persist, especially if the Leafs' playoff run ends tonight.

As seen on Maple Leafs Insider - Samsonov's next contract projection has dropped and it's a very large number
