NHL General Managers Reveal Anticipated Details of William Nylander's Contract Extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs

With William Nylander continuing his red-hot season, the biggest question is now how much his next contract will be worth, and these GMs revealed just that.

NHL General Managers Reveal Exactly How Much They Would Pay For William Nylander

Not trading William Nylander this offseason has proved to be one of Brad Treliving's best moves in his short time as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nylander is off to an incredible start to the season, recording at least a point in every game so far, and tallying 27 total points in 17 games played.

With his contract set to expire after this season, the main question around Nylander is how much he should get paid. Obviously, he is due for a significant raise from his current $6.9 AAV, but what price is enough to give him what he is worth while making it work in Toronto?

Pierre LeBrun recently asked NHL General Managers that exact question for the Athletic, revealing what two NHL executives would offer William Nylander.

Team exec No. 1

«This is a very similar situation to Boston with (David) Pastrnak. Pastrnak signed in March (eight years, $11.25 million) of a season he finished with 61 goals and 113 points. So to me, the fair number would be eight years north of $11 million. I know Matthews is at $13.25 million, but only four-year term. If Nylander goes eight years at $11.5 million, that's $92 million guaranteed dollars where he would have to get over $13 million externally on a 7-year deal to match that money, which is hard to do.»

Team exec No. 2

«I don't see how it's less than $11 million, given the rising cap and the season he's having unless he wants to take a discount to go to a destination of choice. On a seven- to eight-year deal, that is.»

Toronto Needs to Find A Way to Make It Work With Nylander Among Other Highly Paid Stars

Obviously, having Nylander at over $11 million will be difficult for the Leafs to make work, considering they have Matthews at $13.25, Tavares at $11 million, and Marner at $10.9 million. However, GMs are pretty unanimous that Nylander will get somewhere around the 10 million mark at least, given the premium that Toronto pays.

"If I'm Nylander's camp, why wouldn't I be starting with Marner's number?"

This morning on #FirstUp, we continued our discussion around William Nylander's contract situation and asked
about the starting point in negotiations.

To make it work, someone will have to take a discount in their next deal, and that is likely to be John Tavares. Tavares, or Johnny Toronto, has been public about his love for the franchise, and as he ages, its more than likely that he will be willing to take the necessary pay cut to finish his career with his hometown team, while putting them in a position to win a cup.
