Jonathan Toews Reveals His Future With a Heartfelt Message to Hawks Fans
BY MACKENZIE STERN-KOLESNIKOW MARCH 28, 2023 (2:21 PM)
Toews Might Leave the Blackhawks
Toews made a statement, stating that:
"Regardless of what happens in the future this summer, it's definitely on my mind that this could be my last few weeks here in Chicago as a Blackhawk,"
Toews has spent his entire 15-year NHL career with the Blackhawks, he is currently in the final season of his $84 million contract he signed back in 2014. Besides his contract, Toews has some health issues that might force him to end his career.
Back in February, Toews admitted that he is still suffering from long COVID, and chronic immune response syndrome. This forced him to miss the entire 2020-2021 season. Toews has been showing improvement in his condition, before it got worse in January. He has not played since January 28.
"When day after day you're just pushing through pain, it's like, to what end?" Toews said. "I'm at that point where it feels like more damage is being done than is a good thing."
Toews played in 46 out of the Blackhawks' first 48 games this season, but it became too much for his body and he had to stop.
"It just got to the point where I couldn't move on the ice and didn't even want to put on my skates or roll out of bed to come to the rink," he said. "So it was pretty rough."
He was able to join the team for their morning skate on Tuesday. But he did not play against the Stars. He explained that he is making a push to join the team for the end of the season.
"That's definitely very important for me to just go out there, enjoy the game, soak it in, and just really appreciate everything I've been able to be a part of here in Chicago - and show my appreciation to the fans as well," he said.
Toews has won 3 Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks, a Conn Smythe Trophy and the Selke Trophy during his time with Chicago.
