Five years ago the Leafs signed Auston Matthews giving him the ability to hit free agency with full autonomy early in his career

Matthews only has four months left on the $58.2 million deal he signed five years ago.

On July 1st, 2024, the leafs will lose control over Matthews, possibly risking losing Matthews.

Andy Strickland and Cam Janssen discussed the topic and came to the conclusion that


«I think they have no choice but to move him if they don't sign him this summer, are you going to lose him for nothing?»


Matthews is an Arizona native and has expressed interest in continuing his career at Arizona



If Matthews gets traded, it would possibly be the greatest trade of the century since Eric Lindros and the Nordiques

It is tough to imagine the Leafs letting Matthews go, considering that he was the 1st Overall Pick in 2016.
