Avalanche Forward Chooses to Leave the Organization

It was announced yesterday that the Colorado Avalanche will lose the services of one of their prospects.

Sampo Ranta, the 22-year-old Finnish player, has announced that he has signed a contract with MoDo in the Swedish Hockey League.

Ranta Joins the SHL

The forward seems at peace with his decision:

"I chose MoDo because it is a club with ambitions and a drive to achieve success. It is also a club with a lot of tradition and history. It felt like it suited me well, and I have heard very good things about MoDo and Örnsköldsvik from my Swedish friends."

He added, "My big goal is to help MoDo win many games and achieve success in the SHL. As a player, I am driven to take steps forward. The SHL is a very good league with great competition, and I think it will be a lot of fun."

Ranta's journey in North America didn't happen the way he wanted it to.

After being drafted by the Avs in the third round in 2018, he spent three seasons at the University of Minnesota and then signed his first pro contract in 2021. He joined the Colorado Eagles, where he experienced most of his success in America.

He played only 16 games in the NHL between 2021 and 2023 and took part in two playoff games.

Now, he turns to Europe to give his career a second breath.

For the next couple of years, the Avs still have a hold on his NHL rights, but he'll be free to join another team when he becomes a UFA.
